Clean the outside of the copper tube and the inside of the fitting socket. Those are the two surfaces that meet in a soldered joint. Select a brush for the tube and fitting size; the number on copper water tube is not its measured outside diameter.

Two surfaces, two cleaning jobs

A tube-cleaning brush works around the tube exterior where the fitting will sit. A fitting brush reaches inside the socket. Both surfaces need oxidation and contaminants removed before the specified flux and soldering steps. Oatey also describes sand cloth or abrasive mesh for the tube exterior and a matching-size fitting brush for the interior.

Cleaning is separate from deburring. A reamer addresses the burr left at a cut edge; brushing the joining surfaces does not replace that step. See our copper deburring tool guide if the cut edge is the unfinished part of the job.

Match nominal size to actual outside diameter

For the common U.S. copper water-tube sizes below, outside diameter is 1/8 inch larger than nominal size. The inside bore varies with wall thickness, so do not select a brush by measuring the open bore alone. Confirm the tube marking, actual outside diameter, and matching fitting.

3/4 inch7/8 inch62831
1 inch1-1/8 inches62841

Mill-Rose's chart labels the first size “I.D.” and pairs it with the outside diameters above. That label is not a promise of the tube's measured bore. Other tubing systems can use different size conventions.

Buying for one size? Compare a correctly sized individual brush with the three-size kit. A kit is worth considering when you actually need its range; owning more sizes does not solve access, damaged tube, or an uncertain repair plan.

Using a powered brush? Mill-Rose specifies clockwise rotation at a low-speed setting for Power-Deuce. Follow the current brush and drill instructions for your setup.

Researched option: Mill-Rose 62850 Power-Deuce Power Pack

Mill-Rose lists three brush sizes—1/2, 3/4, and 1 inch nominal copper sizes, paired with the outside diameters above—and a Quik-Change chuck adaptor in the 62850 kit. Each brush provides fitting-interior and tube-exterior cleaning surfaces.

This is a researched buying option. We have not established that the exact 62850 kit is the tool shown in our copper-preparation footage, and we are not presenting a hands-on test of that kit.

Before ordering: Match your size to the table, then confirm the selected listing says model 62850 and includes the components you need.

Need a repair decision before a tool decision?

If you are unsure about the tube condition, leak source, access, or joining method, get the repair assessed first. A cleaning brush does not determine whether a plumbing repair is suitable.
