Dishwasher Air Gap Leaking? What to Check Before Buying Parts

Stop the dishwasher and check the air gap and its downstream drain path. Debris, a restricted hose, a backed-up sink, or a disposal connection issue can cause water to escape at the air gap. Never plug the vent to force the water somewhere else.
What an air gap does
A dishwasher air gap creates a physical break between the dishwasher’s discharge and the home’s drain system. GE explains that this helps prevent backflow into the dishwasher when the drain system clogs. Requirements vary by location and installation. Separate an overflow from an under-sink leak
Water spilling out of the top of the air gap while the dishwasher drains points you toward a drainage restriction. Water dripping below the countertop may instead involve a hose, clamp, fitting, or mounting problem. Both can occur at once. Dry the accessible area and note where water first appears rather than buying an air-gap replacement by default.
If water is near an outlet, disposal wiring, or another electrical component, keep clear of the wet equipment and get help. Do not continue running the dishwasher to reproduce a leak that is already causing damage.
Checks you can make without taking the plumbing apart
- Stop the cycle. Follow the appliance instructions. GE says to have the dishwasher latch off or unlatched before removing a typical air-gap cover.
- Look inside the accessible top. On a serviceable design, remove the decorative cover and inner cap as directed. Clear visible debris and reinstall the parts correctly.
- Look at the drain hose route. An obvious kink, crushed section, or poor connection needs attention. Do not pull hard on a hose you cannot see end to end.
- Check the sink. If the sink is backing up too, an air-gap brush alone is unlikely to fix the larger drain problem.

A long brush is not a license to force it around blind bends or push debris deeper into the system. If it catches, stop. Keep cleaning tools dedicated to this dirty job and away from food-preparation surfaces.
Use a towel or shallow container to protect the cabinet while inspecting. Avoid chemical drain cleaner in the dishwasher or air gap; it is not a substitute for identifying the obstruction, and it creates another hazard if parts later need disassembly.
When parts are the right purchase
A cracked fitting, damaged hose, or failed connection may need replacement. Match hose sizes, dishwasher requirements, disposal connection, and local installation rules before ordering. An electronic leak alarm can provide an additional warning under the cabinet, but it does not repair the fault or stop the water.
Renters should report the leak promptly and avoid changing the installation without permission. Builders and property managers should check the complete discharge route, not just replace the visible chrome cap.
