Where to Place Water Leak Detectors in Your Home
A sensor in the wrong spot can stay dry while water damages the cabinet beside it. Start with the path a leak would take—not the easiest place to hide the alarm.

The quick answer
Place water leak detectors where escaping water is likely to collect: inside sink cabinets, near a water heater, beside a washing machine, and at accessible dishwasher or refrigerator supply areas. The sensing contacts or cable must be in the water’s path.
A spot alarm is a warning device, not a whole-home guarantee. One sensor does not monitor every room, and an alarm alone does not turn off the water.
Use this guide to make a placement plan before buying a multipack. Then check the instructions for the exact detector you choose. A basic audible alarm, a connected sensor, and an automatic shutoff system solve different problems.
Where should water leak detectors go?
Walk through the house and look for separate places where a leak could go unnoticed. Our planning rule: prioritize hidden connections, areas you rarely check, and places where a small leak could reach cabinets or a finished room below.
Inside sink cabinets
Look at the cabinet floor beneath the supply valves, drain, disposal, and any water-filter connections. Choose an unobstructed location that escaping water can reach. Keep cleaning bottles from covering or knocking the sensor over.
A raised shelf or a mat that keeps the contacts dry can defeat the placement.
Near the water heater
Consider the floor around the heater or an existing drain pan, where permitted by both manufacturers. Keep the pan outlet, service access, and appliance clearances open. Never place a sensor inside a burner compartment or on a hot surface.
Do not remove or block a pan drain to make an alarm trigger sooner.
At the washing machine
Plan around the supply connections, drain-hose area, and floor or existing pan. The detector must remain accessible for testing and battery changes. Use a compatible sensing cable when a hard-to-reach location calls for one.
Do not drag a connected machine out just to tuck an alarm behind it.
By the dishwasher or refrigerator
These appliances can hide water connections. Use a safely accessible floor location or a manufacturer-approved remote sensor. Do not remove energized access panels or pinch supply tubing to install an alarm.
A sensor in the sink cabinet may miss a leak trapped beneath the appliance next to it.
Near a toilet supply connection
An accessible spot behind or beside the toilet can help detect water reaching the floor. Avoid ordinary shower splashes and cleaning water. An indoor floor alarm does not belong inside the toilet tank.
A toilet that runs into its bowl needs a different check: diagnose a running toilet.
Utility and other hidden areas
Consider accessible filtration equipment, a utility sink, or other indoor plumbing you seldom inspect. Check the detector’s temperature and moisture limits before using it in a garage or attic.
An alarm is not a substitute for an HVAC overflow safety switch or a properly drained pan.

Check the water path, not just the room
Picture two separate sink cabinets. A detector in one does not cover the other. The same applies when a raised edge, appliance pan, or cabinet divider keeps water in its own space. Count these separate areas before deciding how many sensors to buy.
Set the sensing part at the intended level. A detector balanced on its side, lifted by a cord, or placed on top of stored items may not work as intended. Keep it where you can inspect it without reaching past electrical parts or moving heavy equipment.
Do not create a leak to test the location. Use the maker’s test method instead. After cleaning, appliance service, or rearranging a cabinet, check that the sensor is still in place.
Audible alarm, phone alert, or automatic shutoff?
- A simple audible alarm
- A practical starting point when someone nearby can hear and respond. It avoids app setup, but a beeper in an empty house cannot call you.
- A connected leak detector
- Useful when remote alerts matter. Verify the model’s network or hub requirements, notification setup, battery status, and any ongoing fees. Confirm someone can actually respond to an alert.
- A system with an automatic shutoff valve
- Can add a response when a compatible sensor or flow monitor detects a problem. It needs the right valve, plumbing layout, configuration, and installation. A standalone sensor does not acquire shutoff capability just because it uses Wi-Fi.

A simple indoor alarm option

Zircon Leak Alert Water Detector
This basic indoor spot alarm sounds when water reaches its sensing contacts. It uses a 9V alkaline battery. It does not send phone alerts or shut off water.
It may suit a cabinet or utility area where you can hear it and act. Check the selected pack, included batteries, and exact model before ordering. This is a product-fit example, not a hands-on comparative test.
The Zircon instructions require the contacts to touch the monitored surface. They also explain testing after battery installation, drying the contacts after an alarm, and false alarms caused by conductive surfaces such as metal. Check that guidance before placing it in a metal pan.
Make a simple maintenance and response plan
- Label the location. “Upstairs hall bath” is more useful than “Sensor 3” when someone gets an alert.
- Test before relying on it. Follow the manufacturer’s procedure and maintenance schedule. For connected models, verify the notification reaches the intended person.
- Keep access clear. You need to reach the detector, replace its battery, and inspect the area.
- Choose a backup contact. Agree on who can respond if you are away. An alert without an action plan leaves a gap.
Renters: agree on the property’s reporting process and get permission before changing plumbing or shared equipment. Builders and landlords: include sensor locations, manuals, test instructions, and alert responsibilities in the handover information. A new occupant should not inherit an alarm tied only to someone else’s phone.
What should you do when a leak alarm sounds?
First, check whether the area is safe. Do not step into water near electrical equipment or reach through water to unplug an appliance. If you cannot safely isolate the hazard from a dry place, keep people away and get qualified help. The CDC’s electrical safety guidance explains why standing water changes the response.
If safe, stop using the affected fixture. Only operate a known, accessible customer-owned shutoff that you are authorized to use; never force a stuck valve or operate utility equipment without permission. Renters should contact maintenance promptly. Identify and repair the source before simply drying the sensor and putting it back.

How many water leak detectors do I need?
Count separate areas water could collect, rather than choosing a number from your home’s square footage. Start with the highest-concern locations you identified, then check whether additional sensors or a compatible cable are needed.
Can one detector cover the whole house?
A spot detector only responds when water reaches its sensing part. Whole-home flow monitoring is a different technology, and even that does not replace checking drains, pans, and hidden moisture.
Will a floor sensor detect a running toilet?
Not if the water stays inside the tank and bowl. A dry floor sensor can coexist with a toilet that wastes water. Use our running-toilet checks for that problem.
Should I put a detector outdoors in the meter box?
Only use equipment specifically rated for the conditions and allowed by your utility. The basic indoor alarm discussed here is not an outdoor meter-box solution. Standing water outside calls for a different assessment: rainwater or a meter-box leak?
