1. Lid access
A lid key fits the lock or lifting point on a compatible meter-box cover.
Opening the cover and turning a water valve are separate jobs that can require different tools.

2. Meter
The meter measures water use. It is not the same component as the shutoff valve.
Do not disturb utility seals, wiring or meter connections. Contact the utility about its equipment.

A service valve may be located beside the meter. Its shape and working depth determine tool fit.
Check utility rules before operating meter equipment; do not force the valve.

The home may have a separate customer-side shutoff outside the meter box or elsewhere.
Locate and label your accessible shutoff in advance. A plumber can assess a valve that is hard to turn or leaking.

Water in a box may come from several sources. A pump removes water but does not fix a pipe leak.
Do not reach into hazardous water or operate electrical equipment in unsafe conditions.
