The short answer
Choose a water-rated gauge with the correct connection, a readable scale, and a range suitable for the test. A maximum-reading pointer can help flag a peak, but one reading does not diagnose the entire plumbing system.
Pressure and flow answer different questions
Pressure is not a direct measurement of how many gallons a fixture delivers. A clogged aerator, partly closed valve, supply restriction, or fixture-specific issue can reduce flow even when a pressure reading elsewhere appears reasonable. Do not buy a pressure regulator simply because one faucet runs slowly.
Write down the symptom first: low flow at one fixture, low flow throughout the house, intermittent changes, or concerns about excessive pressure. That record helps determine what should be tested.
Match the gauge connection
Many homeowner test gauges connect to a compatible hose-thread outlet. Confirm the thread standard and sealing washer rather than assuming every threaded connection is interchangeable. Use a safe, accessible cold-water test point appropriate for the gauge and the system.
Do not attach an ordinary hose-thread gauge to a hot water-heater drain as a casual shortcut. Hot water, damaged drain valves, and unsuitable gauge ratings introduce avoidable risks.

Record the conditions with the number
A static reading is taken when water is not flowing; a reading during use answers a different question. Record when the measurement was taken and whether fixtures or appliances were drawing water. If comparing readings, keep the conditions consistent enough for the comparison to mean something.
A peak pointer may move because of an event you did not observe. Note the result and have unusual readings evaluated. Do not jump from one peak to a specific regulator or expansion-system diagnosis without further checking.
Do not turn an adjustment screw by guesswork
A pressure-reducing valve, expansion-control device, and supply restriction are different components with different jobs. Changing one setting may not correct the underlying issue. Acceptable pressure and required controls depend on the installation and applicable requirements; this buying article does not replace a site-specific assessment.
If pressure changes suddenly, fixtures bang, relief devices discharge, or leaks appear, arrange professional evaluation. A gauge is information—not protection against continued damage.
